Weapons
Board policy JCDBB states:
A student shall not knowingly possess, handle or transmit any object that can reasonably be considered a weapon at school, on school property, or at a school-sponsored event. This shall include any weapon, any item being used as a weapon or destructive device, or any facsimile of a weapon.
Possession of a firearm or other weapon shall result in expulsion from school for a period of one calendar year, except that the superintendent may recommend this expulsion requirement be modified on a case-by-case basis.
Possession of a facsimile of a weapon may result in suspension or expulsion.
Students violating this policy shall be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies and, if a juvenile, to SRS or the Commissioner of Juvenile Justice.
Implementation of the policy:
Every apparent violation of this policy is reported immediately to the building principal, who conducts an inquiry into the circumstances. Once the basic facts are clear, the building principal notifies the superintendent.
Unannounced building searches are conducted periodically at PLMS and PLHS by Providence Working Canines. These dogs can detect weapons and ammunition by scent.
Credible incidents are reported to law enforcement for complete investigation.
Parents/guardians are notified as detailed in school handbooks.
